On passage - day 10

27 June 2011 | On Passage to Tonga
Yo and Dan Hellier
Up until yesterday we were congratulating ourselves on yet another flawless picking of fine winds to get to Tonga. We have been monitoring buoyweather and getting gribs and the fleet nadi code - all great sources of weather info. Those reports seemed to be spot on with wind directions and timing. We shouldn't have got cocky though. By yesterday afternoon wind strengths began to increase steadily and move round to the west and then southwest. We shortened sail and began ducking squalls some gusting up around 40 with torrential downpours. All night she blew. Around 5 am the wind danced around the clock giving us a merry old time trying to figure where to put the main. Finally it settled in the SW still very strong and we ran off when we could. By 9am we are still sailing under a heavily reefed main waiting for it all to moderate. ........all well except for a big bump on Yo's head where she flew across the cabin with a can of pears (still cleaning up that mess). Waiting to see what happens with the wind. Hoping we can still get to Tonga when the wind shifts a bit.

This huge old banyan tree ashore in Neiafu was uprooted by the same blow that gave us such curry
