Day 20-26 Baldwinsville
30 September 2013 | B-Ville, NY
Since we stayed in Baldwinsville, Lock 24 for a full week, I took notes each day, so I’ll pass on my notes rather than go paragraph style. But I will say it is quite a beautiful town. The terminal wall is part of a park that sees a large number of people. The restaurant is a short distance away and the showers are across the lock in the Budweiser Amphitheater. Across another bridge, where the fishermen vie for the biggest fish of the day, is a grand view of the dam and electric plant. For a small town, it has its share of downtown traffic, but it also has the stores and services necessary for the transient boater. John and I were able to relax, regroup, and redo boat problems that seemed to never be solved. Isn’t that the boating life? Though we may never pass this way again, the people here made our stay in B-ville a fine, memorable one.
Day 20 Thursday, September 19, 2013
*Errands in town: oil & filters, locking cable for the dingy, DC charger, rum
*Andy, lock tender, discussed situation with lock 13 & staying here, Restrooms & showers, electricity & water at terminal wall. No charge and no 48 hour limit.

*Met boaters here for a group weekend: Barb & Don, Ann & Bill, Tony & Shirley, Michelle, and others
*Uptown to buy coffee, stopped at Sammy Malone’s for a drink
*Joined other boaters for dinner in the park: fire pit, drinks and conversation

*Chores around the boat: laundry, dishes, clean head, sewing, John researching on-line
*Rain & clouds all day, used cube heater extensively
*John bought electronics, to be delivered general delivery PO Baldwinsville
*Played some guitar
*Dinner at Lock 24 Restaurant with 6 other couples, thoroughly enjoyable. Topic? Boating!
*Watched the movie Birdcage & news
Day 23 Sunday, September 22, 2013
*Cold, cold. Puttered around in the boat: made oatmeal, did the dishes, laundry
*Learned a New Zealand sea shanty: Across the Line. Wrote out words and chords
*Watched the America’s Cup with Tony and Shirley aboard Headquarters: New Zealand vs. USA. Took cheese and crackers, rum and coke 4:00-9:30 pm. Shirley added sweet pickles and olives. Nice conversation.
*Most of the other boaters left today. They are at J & S Marina, a short distance away.
Day 24 Monday, September 23, 2013
*Sent 3-berry muffins to Headquarters; they gave us a kiwi bird, left at noon to Brewerton to haul out, return to NZ, and come back next spring to finish their last 500 miles of the Loop.
*Met local lady cop, Officer Cokely, no worries here; we’re keeping the riff-raff away.
*Alex, Chad, and Drew arrived on their 1972 C & C 30 from Canada. They unstepped their mast at their home port, Port Dover, near Long Point and motored across Lake Erie.
*Good news of Lock 13 opening Friday through Sunday, Oct 4-6, 7 am to 8 pm all three days, If you miss this opening, it will be another 3 weeks to wait.
Day 25 Tuesday, September 24, 2013
*John studying charts and webpages. Found SEA: Southbound Escapees Association. Al is behind us at Buffalo.
*Replaced all-around white light top of mast
*Invited Alex, Drew, and cousin Chad to music jam, Drew singer-song writer, excellent talent, songs about beaches, sunshine, ocean, relationships. Drew on guitar, Chad on bass, and Alex on banjo. Removed table to make room, still very cold out and have been using the cube heater.
*Nordic tug came in, Captain John a character. Captain grabbed my jeans waist band to prevent me from falling in as I pulled the stern of the boat up to the dock…only succeeded to stretch my pants for a butt shot...
Day 26 Wednesday, September 25, 2013
*Farmers’ Market today, buy breads, make chili for our guests tonight and jam some more. So glad we have the one bike aboard.
*Disappointment in: the market, but did have live music; the computer, picked up a virus when trying to download Open CPN; the mosquitoes and the cold, not conducive to an outside music jam.
*Both engine parts and GPS navigation receiver arrived by Post Office today, happy to continue journey then tomorrow, Thursday, exactly one week from our original plan. Predicted weather outlook very good for us.
Excited to be on the move again.
