Left Georgetown and heading North
09 March 2014 | Off of Lee Stocking Cay, Marine Research Center
Sunny, 76 (cold mon) and a nice breeze
With great sadness and joy, we left Georgetown this morning and started the trek back to Florida. Today, the seas were 2 to 4 feet with a 15 mph wind out of the North and sunny. We had a pretty pleasant cruise of around 30 miles and are anchored off of an abandoned marine research center. This is quite astonishing, the center was the hub of research for marine life in the Bahamas and the Caribbean, all funded privately by a wealthy guy by the name of Perry. There are numerous buildings, houses and "hotel" like suites for visiting scientists and an airstrip to fly in and out. We saw a hyperbolic chamber, diving stations, habitat ponds galore and tons of stuff just left. As the story goes, the guy funded this until 2011 and apparently, to the chagrin of his heirs because the day after he died, they ordered everyone off the property and abandoned the place.
The waters here are so perfectly clear, there are Rays all over the place, we saw one with at least 6 feet wing tip to wing tip, they lay down in the sand and as we ride over them they spook, and swim off. We toured the research center, amazing what 2 or three years of no upkeep can do to a property like this. We plan tomorrow, to go fishing, then kayaking and swimming on the many deserted beaches here. We plan to stay here for a few days then head further North. Everything is going perfect. What a Winter we had! The pic is of the truck parked where they were when they were ordered out, water bottle on the front seat and work gloves, left in a hurry I guess.
