Final Preparations for the Bay of Biscay.....again!

I think I have a feeling of deja vu. We are still on the visitors pontoon at Turnaware on the Rivel Fal where we have been for the past four days carrying out boat repairs and some modifications before heading out into Biscay again, this time hopefully in some better weather. The forecast at present is giving us a possible departure of next Monday/Tuesday after we have re-stocked the galley, fuel and water at the Falmouth Yacht Haven during a short stop. Having returned into Falmouth Harbour earlier in the week in a Force 9 following sea, it would appear that we may be crossing Biscay now with no wind at all! Best take a bit of spare fuel I think. Despite being a very quiet spot here on the river, we have found plenty to do, albeit mainly repairs and mods. The damaged lines have all been identified now and are being replaced on Monday along with the broken pulley on the boom. I have now wired up our low speed alternator which generates free power, even at night, as it is attached to the propeller shaft and spun by the propeller dragging through the water when we are sailing. The Hydrovane wind-vane steering system is now correctly aligned rather than fighting against the main rudder. The steering wheel is now in the middle when going straight ahead, rather than 40 degrees off to starboard (!) due to a slight cable stretch issue.... The electronic autopilot is now installed into the cockpit so the helmsman/woman can nip down and get a cuppasoup and a bite to eat when on watch without the boat heading off on another course. We have a flexible solar panel now fitted across the rear deck to generate a bit more charging power when/if the sun is out. A new stowage plan is being developed to avoid the interior damage that we sustained last week caused by hard things flying across cabins and damaging more woodwork. So, all in all, not much time to enjoy Falmouth unfortunately but our window for crossing Biscay this year due to other commitments is running out so either we are gone by next Wednesday at the latest or our trip this year must be cancelled which is the last thing we want. At this moment in time, we are not certain if we will reach Corfu now in our timeframe so we may have to leave the boat at a secure location somewhere on route which will be disappointing but possibly unavoidable. We'll be keeping hopes up to still reach our destination but unfortunately due to the many delays whilst at the boatyard outside of our control, our 'holiday' is rapidly turning somewhat into a delivery trip. Still, once the sun is out and the dolphins appear, everything else is forgotten :-)
