The Algarve at Last!!
05 August 2016 | Alvor Lagoon, Portugal
Graham
We are now well and truely on the Portuguese Algarve. The sea temperature has reached 20.3 DegC, the massive sea swell caused by the North Atlantic has diminished to a relatively small ripple and today saw has sailing along at 7.5 knots in a 15 knot breeze. Brilliant! What a contrast to yesterday when I spent 7 hours at the wheel in a Force 7, gusting Force 8, trying to minimise the number of soakings I was getting as the large waves hammered the boat all afternoon and evening. At point point I recall a comment from a crew member asking whether I could actually try to keep the rudder and propeller in the sea....this proving to be a fairly serious challenge. Still, good old QUASAR IV pulled through fine, albeit with a little extra water in the bilges and the dreaded 'under the galley' leak back yet again. Back to the drawing board on solving this one which has been with us since leaving Bermuda in 2010. Alvor Lagoon where we are at the moment is a great little anchorage which almost totally empties at night with the exception of the ocean-hardened cruisers and crew, so now there are only three boats left following quite a busy afternoon. The wind has picked up again to Force 5 so more anchor chain has just been rolled out to keep us in place overnight. If any other boats come in later this evening and anchor too close to us (like last night in Sagres), we'll get Tony's guitar our and get playing - that'll get rid of them pretty quickly :-) Off to crack open a bottle of local Alentejo red win and locate some suitable cheese from within the bowels of our fridge....
