We have arrived in Cartagena, a port well used by the Phoenicians, developed in 243BC by Hasdrubal and became the centre of Carthaginian influence in Europe, helped by slaves working the gold and silver mines in the region. It was quite a slog along from Marbella as unfortunately the wind was directly on the nose of the boat for the entire trip with the exception of a two and a half hour window where we actually managed to sail! This resulted in the trip taking a little longer than hoped as QUASAR IV travels faster under sail than when using the engine. The approach to Cartagena was quite straightforward as we arrived near mid-day so plenty of light to see the features of the harbour. A quick call on VHF Ch 9 to the Harbour Master, Alberto, and we were soon safely tied up on a finger pontoon. First job - get our canvas sun cover up and get out of the Spanish mid-day sun! Then the mad dogs and Englishman bit, go for a walk around the town.... First stop, an ice cold beer, second stop the the Tourist Information centre. Last night's entertainment consisted of a visit to a gastronomic festival accompanied by an excellent live rock band about five minutes walk from the boat. We were all very tired on returning to the boat and slept like logs last night, despite the mozzies on board and the massive Thomson cruise ship that sneaked in during the early hours of this morning which no-one heard or saw!
