50 miles, no ships, no wind....

24 July 2008 | Cascais, Near Lisbon
Graham
After our rapid tour of Peniche last night, I met the marina security guard at 7am today, paid the marina fee, and we did a sharp exit from Peniche harbour towards Cascais, 50 Nm away. The weather looked promising; hardly any cloud, tee shirts and shorts on, and a 10 knot breeze which QUASAR IV is very happy sailing in. Well, all of that lot lasted a good hour before the clouds came over, the fleeces went on, and wind began to drop. We managed 3 hours of sailing before the engine had to be fired up. At this point, the GPS receiver told us that at our current speed under sail (1.2 knots) our ETA at Cascais was actually the day after tomorrow! By about 2pm, the sun was out again, the dolphins came to play with the boat again, but the wind had dropped to zero. The sea was flat calm and the situation reminded me of the film 'Dead Calm' so we decided not to pick up any strangers who may approach us in a dinghy! Needless to say, as we approached the anchorage at Cascais, the wind picked up steadily over about 15 minutes, and we are now sitting here at anchor in a steady Force 5, just what we really needed all day! Mark T is re-joining the boat here in a couple of days time, and we hope to visit Lisbon and Sintra during our stop here. That's if I can get enough energy back in my body after our 4 attempts at anchoring. A combination of circumstances, several of which are unprintable, made anchoring here somewhat stressful! Anyway, looks like a great place to explore over the next few days.
