10 December 2009 | Rodney Bay Marina Boatyard, St Lucia
Graham
Having survived a couple of ARC 2009 parties (awesome!) which we have had a free invite to as we are working some shifts on the Finish Line, the impact of the trip up from Grenada is beginning to hit home. Tracey and I diagnosed the engine oil problem - a fractured casing on the engine oil cooler. Time to call an expert! Along came Alwin Augustin, a local with an excellent knowledge of Volvo Penta engines, who came out to the anchorage to assist, and stripped the entire cooling system from the engine; there we had the proof - a 5mm hole in the casing. No problem getting a spare though from Volvo, at a mere US$2158, plus the cost of the heart surgery I now need following the shock! We arranged a tow into the marina, yes, another US$120, but professionally carried out by Warren, aka 'Renegade', and are now tied up in the boatyard alongside another boat that looks like it may sink overnight....still, we are in a better place for work to be undertaken. Whilst in the anchorage, our mainsail became severly jammed in the mast, and we have a sail specialist arriving tomorrow to assist, we having spent over 3 hours trying to sort out the problem. So, sailing is off for a few weeks while we get ourselves sorted out, and it looks like it may be Christmas in Saint Lucia again this year. Not at all bad really. Our friends on ASOLARE, an Amel 54, including Mark T, Sallyanne and Clare all arrived safely from Las Palmas in a record 15 days (!) and we have all been partying (and commiserating!) since. Tonight is a quiet night in with tuna pasta, and to catch up on some desperately needed sleep. We have now realised that to keep sailing, you need a career in banking - preferably robbing them! With wifi now available to us again, we'll add a few pictures over the next few days, so keep watching and thanks Clare and Richard for the comments on the previous entry.
