On our way to Bermuda at last

12 May 2010 | 4 Nm West of Sombrero Island
Graham
An early start this morning. We moved QUASAR IV from our night time anchored location to a point much closer to the lagoon in the event that spares were needed from ashore. I set to work on removing the leaking hull fitting, Mark got the bacon butties on the go, and Clare pumped up the dinghy ready for a spares trip. Once removed, the only problem with the fitting was a totally worn out seal. A new O-ring from th eengine spares tub, some vaseline, and PTFE garden hose tape and we now have a perfectly serviceable fitting, good as new, which is why we are now 45 Nm north of Sint Maarten and on our way now to Bermuda. The wind is a steady 23 knots, the sea state about 1.7 metres which is not too bad, and the weather fair to sunny. It's still warm on deck and melting down below in the cabins (about 35 Deg C), the latter of which is making sleeping slightly difficult, but resting no problem. Our watch pattern starts at 7 am; day watches are 4 hours each and night watches are 3 hours each, night being set as 7 pm to 7 am.. Chef of the day rotates between the 3 of us, with me yesterday, Mark today and Clare tomorrow. Cleaning the hull of the boat has really paid off and we are speeding along at the moment at between 6.5 and 7.0 knots which is very fast for QUASAR IV. The crew is happy (as is the skipper!) and the PG Tips is flowing plentiful. It is now only 820 Nm to Bermuda which at this speed we will cover in about 6 days, although we are expecting a period of no wind in 3 days time, so no doubt we will be slowing down sometime in the near future! The fishing line has been out all day but we are yet to catch tonight's dinner.....
