Another night of calm, but a day of wind

Another day passes and......still no fish! Perhaps we should apply for the Guiness Book of Records? We have now travelled 1682 Nm without catching anything, despite having a line off the back of the boat with a lure for the entire time! After a night of motoring last night across a glassy, but rocky sea, with 3 knots of wind coming from random directions, the wind picked up again just after lunch today and we have been sailing along nicely since then at between 5 and 6 knots. Based on our weather reports that we download over email from our HF SSB radio, we have decided to head further north due to our relatively poor progress in the direction of the Azores. Shame we're not going to Nova Scotia to the moment as the wind is good for that! The sun has been out all day and we have all been on deck listening to Mozart and other classical music, rather than the usual afternoon heavy rock session which is more typical of Quasar IV music hours. Clare baked up an excellent loaf of bread this morning with tomato puree in it, so it has an interesting colour, and tastes great, so this morning's breakfast by Mark was scrambled eggs on toast. We have travelled 683 Nm now since leaving Bermuda, but still have a long way to go before reaching the Azores. The return route across the Atlantic is very different from the trade winds route across that we undertook 2 years ago in November 2008 with the Atlantic Rally for Cruisers. The wind is much more variable and steering the exact course you wish to go has so far been impossible with the exception of one day due to wind strength and direction. We are hoping for some more consistent westerlies soon to help us maintain a more easterly course. However, everyone is in fine form, despite our ongoing, and totally baffling, water link into the bilge which remains under control using the well tested 'sponge and bucket' routine well known to most sailors. At least it is not our drinking water leaking out, especially as this looks to be a long trip. Tonight, we are looking forward to Mark's macaroni cheese for supper, which is always excellent. As for tomorrow's cuisine, back to basics as I'm on cooking duties again!
