Return to Brownsea Island

18 August 2010 | Pottery Pier, Brownsea Island, Poole Harbour
Graham
After a very enjoyable stop in Teignmouth, we had to wait for near high tide before departing to get over the sand bar at the entrance. With no detectable wind from the west of southwest as predicated, or indeed anywhere, we motored out of the river and aimed for Portland Bill. Within minutes, a light easterly (!) wind picked up and, full sails out, we set off at 5 to 6 knots towards Poole. After 5 hours, the tide around the Bill was picking up against our favour so some supplementary engine power was needed for a short time, but as we rounded the Bill, full tide against us, the wind magically swung to the west and picked up to 25 knots, so engine off, and sail on. Through the night it proved quite cold, but with a clear sky and great view of the stars and moon for half the night. Our 3-30am arrival in pitch black to Poole Harbour was not quite the plan as we had arrived 6 hours earlier than anticipated due to fantastic sailing conditions. With Tracey manning the chart plotter showing our position, and the detailed printed chart of Poole Harbour to hand, we crept in slowly, past the Sandbanks chain ferry, around the castle, through numerous moored boats, and on to Pottery Pier, one of our all-time favourite anchorages for many years. We are now about 300 metres from Brownsea Island, made famous by Lord Baden-Powell and the scouting movement, anchored in about 2.5 metres of water, and enjoying the view with a cup of freshly perculated coffee and sponge cake, courtesy of my Aunty Margaret (fantastic cake thanks!). It is blowing a hooley (Force 6) at the moment and there are small breaking waves in the harbour, but this will probably all die down later. So, back to the view for now...
