Summer is here!

11 May 2008 | Brixham Marina
Graham
The trip to Brixham from Lymington was 85 miles and involved a 1am departure in the dark, with no moon, so it was REALLY dark. By daybreak, we were well on our way past Poole and heading towards Portland Bill which we had to get past by 8am or we would be forced back in the opposite direction due to the strong currents there. By this time, we had noticed 2 things that would impede our journey - no wind and thick fog. We had noticed the fog as the dawn began to break and already had the radar on to check for other shipping. No sign of anything - good news. Still, at least the forecast had mentioned 'occasional fog patches' so it would probably lift soon.....about 2pm in fact! Yes, 10 hours of no visibility throughout the day during which one ship passed us in the Channel (we think!). The sun finally broke through halfway across Lyme Bay with 20 miles to go and as we approached Brixham, more coastal fog began to appear. The view however was fantastic. As we pulled up in Brixham Harbour, Stuart, our friend from Plain Sailing, called over and had already found us an ideal berth for the boat which is where we will remain until tomorrow. Brixham is a great place to stop with great pubs and live music. Saturday evening was spent in the Blue Anchor listening to Simon Gee, an awesome guitarist who could literally play anything. A relaxing Sunday lunch in the Prince William preceded a walk up towards Bury Head to admire the fantastic view over Brixham on what felt like the hottest day of the year so far. A friend of ours, Simon, had managed to visit us from Cheltenham this weekend so we have had a very mellow few days. We are planning on leaving tomorrow morning and head towards Weymouth. The wind is light, blowing from the wrong direction, but the sun will be out. Hey ho!
