With only 30 miles of Spanish coast left for now, we departed Vilanova this morning, negotiated numerous mussel rafts, and set sail towards Isla Ons, a rugged island with only a few inhabitants. The island is in the entrance to the Ria de Pontevedra and provides some level of protection against the Atlantic weather, particularly in the winter months. With a south westerly head wind for most of the morning, progress was slow, but enjoyable. It did however not leave us with enough time to get to Isla Ons for a lunch stop on anchor, so we aimed directly towards Sangenjo. We are anchored about 200 metres off a long sandy beach called Playa de Silgar. It looks quite a tourist spot; numerous pedelos, deckchairs for hire, etc and loads of people. Unfortunately, or possibly luckily, we cannot safely get to it in the dinghy due to the swell on the water where we are anchored which is about half a metre. Not much, but more than fun in the dinghy! We have some thinking to do tonight on the next few days as there are strong south westerly winds forecast for the next two days and we need to 'take cover' so to speak. The favourable strategy is the head for Bayona tomorrow and spend a few days there exploring the city whilst the poor sailing weather passes. Something to work out after tonight's beef strogonoff, shortly to be prepared and eaten once I finish typing this blog!
