It's hard to imagine 'jet-setting' in a sailing boat that only does about 6 knots average on a good day, but today was different; breakfast in Spain, dinner in Portugal! A glorious sunny day, no wind at all, and a steady motor from Bayona towards Viana Do Castelo, about 35 miles down the coast. As we passed the entrance to the Ria de Mino, we hauled down our Spanish coutesy flag and exchanged it for a Portuguese one, which is far more decorative. Arriving here at 4-30 pm, the first thing we did was put all of the clocks on board back an hour as Portugal is in the same time zone as the UK. This will of course give us an extra hour out on the town without realising it.... The town itself is very picturesque; many old narrow streets with cobbled roads and small, more traditional shops. Having been so impressed with the place already, we have decided to stop here for two nights so that we can have a really good look around town tomorrow and make the most of our short stop. We had been quite apprehensive about arriving in Portugal as we had been lead to believe that the paperwork on arrival could take several hours due to various official agencies' involvement. Nothing could have been further from the truth; the marina staff are exceptionally friendly and helpful and we were checked in within 15 minutes of arrival. The marina is very close to the centre of town, and the surrounding area is very scenic with the old town visible in one direction and various mountain ranges (yet to be identified) to the south east. All in all, a great place to stop so far.
