An afternoon's sailing in the Atlantic

Viana do Castelo was a fascinating place to visit and we all really enjoyed our stop of a few days. This gave us time to explore the town's narrow back streets, climb the hill, all 684 steps of it, to the Santa Luzia church, and walk around the entire castle walls. The town is a mixture of modern architecture intermingled with traditional buildings, with many cobbled streets. Coffee shops are everywhere and we have finally worked out how to order a coffee with milk in Portuguese; the initial snag was correct words, wrong pronunciation! The marina here is very small and we were tied up alongside a Swedish boat of about the same size as us called 'Olivia'. The couple had been cruising the Med for 6 years and were heading back north to winter at St Katherine's Dock, London, before returning home sometime next year. Needless to say, we now have a list of good places to visit in the Med. We left Viana at lunchtime today and headed south with the Portuguese trade winds for about 25 miles and have now arrived in Povoa de Varzim where we have anchored up in the main harbour, next to the marina, to save money of course! If we can work out where to land the dinghy, tomorrow's plan is to catch a train into the old part of Porto and explore the town for the day. This is much easier than trying to take the boat to Porto which is somewhat dicey by all accounts due to strong currents and lack of water depth. Mark T finally caught something on the fishing rod today; unfortunately it was the blades of the wind generator, so he is working on deck at the moment stripping the unit down to remove all of the fishing line that has jammed the propeller mechanism. We have also over-stressed our engine starting battery whilst trying to start our poorly generator, so we need a new battery. In the meantime, My task for tonight is to connect the solar charger to the starter battery to provide additional charging when we are not running the engine. It's Tracey's turn to cook tonight so she has that in hand and dinner will be very welcome once we have fixed and modified the boat once again!
