Our original intention on reaching Madeira was to drop off Mark T for a flight to the UK, then travel along the south coast of Madeira, anchoring as we went. However... our first anchorage should have been Funchal but it turned out more expensive to anchor there than stay in the marina, the latter of which provides us with free water, electricity, and wifi for the laptop. There is an excellent bus service into Funchal and Machico, and plenty of great walks right on the doorstep of the marina, so we are still here! Bongo has continued on looking at the generator (not yet working) and between all of us, we have diagnosed a blown cylinder head gasket. Indeed, when the cylinder head was removed, there was no gasket at all; just rust and an air/water gap. Not long now and it should be up and running again. Away from the boat, we have spent the last few days visiting Funchal, taking the cable car to Monte, tobogganing down the hill for 2km on a wooden sledge (awesome!), visiting palaces, gardens, and orchid cultivation centres, and finally today, taking a mountain walk out towards the lighthouse on eastern end of the island, near where we are in the marina. The views today were spectacular and this walk may have to be done again with the BBQ in the rucsack. Mark T returns on the 8th, hopefully, with our new steering compass which we can then fit before heading off to Lanzarote via the Salvagem Islands nature reserve.
