Anchor dragging...again....

17 March 2009 | St Margaret's Beach, Bequia, The Grenadines
Graham
For the second time in 3 days, our anchor has dragged. Two days ago, despite having been securely in the same location for 2 weeks, we mysteriously moved back about 12 metres at the same time as a Canadian boat was departing the anchorage, a boat which had anchored far too close to us in the first place. This morning, we had a lucky escape. Having been off to the petrol station to stock up on some reserve diesel, the garage was still out of fuel (several days now, no estimated time for the next delivery....), and we returned to QUASAR IV for a coffee. I suddenly heard the ominous sound of the chain dragging just as an American boat was recovering it's anchor to retry again, just in front of us. This time we dragged in excess of 50 metres very rapidly given the 25+ knots of wind we are in at the moment. As we dragged into much deeper water, the anchor stopped holding at all, and we were drifting rapidly towards the Panama Canal which is not currently on this year's itinerary! As we would in the anchor to move, we noticed that 'TOOT', the other boat, came to rest on anchor, exactly where we had been. Thanks a bunch. We have now moved to Princess Margaret's Beach, about half a mile away and where we originally anchored a couple of weeks back before the storm surge started. A better view, plenty of room, and no idiotic anchoring tactics by other boats! Ironically, if the petrol station had been stocked with diesel, we would have returned to the boat later than we did only to find it some distance out to sea which would have really ruined the day I suspect. With lunch up, we are staying on board for the rest of the day!
