Making It Through The Skidagate Narrows

11 June 2014 | Haida Gwaii, BC
George and Sue Stonecliffe
We had a great day after motoring through the East and West Narrows one hour before High Slack. We still had up to 2.5 knots of current with us. There were no other boats making the transit. So we could focus on the track to take. Expecting the worst, we found it to be exhilarating! The channel markers were just right! and Navionics Chartplotter was right on! Once through we decided to head out and around to Buck Channel to see a couple of totem poles, one well-known for its mosquito character. The charts don't have any depths for Buck Channel, so we took a depth reading every five minutes. There was one area that startled us when it came from 450' up to 19'. It might have been a layer of salt, or fresh water, or a whale, or a rock!: anyway we turned around and moved over a quarter mile before trying to enter again successfully. Sue gathered 8 muscles up to 5.5" long for dinner. It's been a great day, as we now sit anchored in Nasi Cove. Crab pot's down.
