Circumnavigating Vancouver Island 2024

Adams Inlet

In 2007 we kayaked in Adams Inlet with Steve and Laurie Holser, and observed over 100 male common merganzers running on the water single-file!! After anchoring as far as allowed, we started kayaking up the inlet with a flooding 2 knot current with us. Timing couldn't have been more perfect to minimize effort, and frankly make the trip possible. With binoculars at the ready, we saw two phalanxes of Canada Geese squabbling with each other, oyster catchers scolding us, Arctic Terns screeching about their dinner, a Hermit Thrush foraging after bugs on a river bank, Wilson's Warblers also looking for bugs, and two Least Sandpipers at the water's edge getting anything they could find. But the thrill was hearing the telltale 'waterfall' of merganzers moving quickly on the water. Although we were distant, it looked like they split up and went as fast on the water away from us without flying. Maybe they were molting? We were sad that they were spending the energy to move away from us in our kayaks. But it was a thrill to see that merganzers are alive and well in Adams Inlet.
