Humpbacks Meet Orcas

As we crossed Chatham Strait to Suiu Island and the Tebenkof Wilderness, we were initially delighted to see a large humpback male breaching, tail lobbing, and pectoral fin slapping. As we were getting closer to him, we were amazed at his strength and endurance which lasted for over a half hour. Then we saw the cause: there was a pod of orcas nearby. We then were close enough, we turned our engine off, and watched as the dominant male orca passed us a hundred yards away going ahead of the slapping humpback. On the far side were two orcas on the surface. And behind were five orcas on our side of the whale. The humpback continued to demonstrate as the orcas slowly moved past him. Finally the humpback dove and got out of the area. Wow! With all the returning salmon, we expect the orcas had an abundant supply of food. Later as we were moving away, we could hear 'complaining and blowing', and saw at least five humpbacks with orcas on all sides of them. Maybe there was a calf that was being protected. What a unique experience for us!
