British Columbia was experiencing about 150 forest fires from dry lightning strikes. As we traveled in the morning through the Whirlpool and Green Point Rapids, we started noticing a haze of smoke encroaching upon the Islands. After anchoring in Thurston Marine Park, the smoke overtook the anchorage in addition to the surrounding mountains, islands, and interconnecting waterways. At one point it was so thick we could barely see one-quarter mile away. Initially we saw some bald eagles, common merganzers, and murrelets. But as time went on we just stayed by the boat. A special delight was inviting over David and Gillian from sv Carousel. They are active participants in the Great Northern Boaters Net every morning.
