First 24 Hours of Baja Ha-ha Rally

31 October 2017 | Off Ensenada, Mexico
George Stonecliffe
The morning of October 30, we paraded past Shelter Harbor and Mexican dignitaries in San Diego along with 130 other sailboats. We temporarily waited and dodged a US Navy frigate and a LHD (helicopter carrier). Although winds were light at 10 knots, we were able to sail most of the day. Various boats were catching yellow tuna or bonita, and reporting their successes to the fleet. At 6:30pm we hauled down the sails and motored at 6 knots due to a drop in winds. At 9pm we had a cruise ship from Ensenada go straight through our fleet of 130 boats at a slower 7 knots. But many had to adjust course. Size makes right sometimes. As we motor through the night. we are able to see many of our fellow sailors on AIS, and Automatic Identification System, that shows boat positions on our chartplotter. This allows us to safely pass along with so many others. The phosphorescence in the water at night as we pass through it is stunningly beautiful!
