Another awesome single handed sail.

08 September 2007
I enjoyed an awesome single handed sail heading on a single tack north east across the bay and then back. Winds were in mid teens. On my way out I had the waves (swells) coming from the stern starboard corner. They were 2-3', probably closer to 3 feet most of the time. I was surfing down them slightly and my GPS was reading my over ground speed to be 5.5 to 6.5 knots just about my entire sail. It showed I hit 7.25 knots at one time! When I tacked back, I was taking the waves on the bow at about a 45 degree angle. It slowed me down about a half a knot, but it was a lot of fun. My deck was soaked and I got sprayed a few times. I got back faster than expected and sailed down the West River a bit, then tacked back to the Rhode just to spend some more time sailing. I didn't get any photos because I forgot my memory card at home. I had to cut my day short because I had to clean up and head over to a birthday party in Old Town Alexandria.

Here was my course plotted for the day:

My friend Dave went on a long single handed sail on his C-250. He got an early start around 7 or 8 am and sailed for 11 hours for a total distance of 46 nautical miles! He sailed into the Choptank River and came through Knapps Narrows to make a loop back home. It was his first time going through a bascule bridge and probably his longest non-stop sail so far. That was an impressive trip!

Extra: This site is all about my experiences with my first boat; from restoring it, to my sailing adventures. I enjoy hearing from my readers, so feel free to send me an email. I'm also interested in meeting new people in the area, especially people in my age range since I hardly know any that sail.
