Dave and Trevor joined me Sunday on the bay for some exciting sailing. It was another small craft advisory. Winds were from around 18 knots up to mid 20s. There were times that the apparent wind gusts would have been up to around 30 knots at times because of our speed. We were sailing on a close reach to close haul heading out and taking on the waves, which were at times probably about 3'. There were some pretty big swells out there, not just the regular chop. We were having fun and getting a little wet! When we turned back we were on a beam reach with the waves coming from the beam and slightly a stern. We were flying back at the fastest I can ever recall. Dave was reading the GPS over ground speed, "7.5 knots, 7.6, 7.7, 7.8, 7.6,..." We were holding a ground speed of mid 6 knots to mid to high 7 knots surfing the waves! Wow, you should have seen the grins on our faces! Actually, maybe I'll upload one of those pictures.
Dave took this photo. The deck was drying now that we weren't heading into the waves. Before we turned back, it was too risky to take out the camera because of all the spray. I need to get a water proof camera!
Here's the three of us:
I handed the tiller over to Trevor near Thomas Point and we sailed into the West River to add a bit more sailing time. We were making such good time with our speed. We then headed back up the Rhode River, tacking our way into the wind to Cadle Creek. We had an awesome time out there.
Here is our plotted course from the GPS:
