Tortured Ply Main Hull Pt. XIII

19 October 2014 | Bodkin Inlet/Chesapeake Bay
Capn Andy/blustery chilly
It has been about a month since the proa project was started. It took about a week and a day to make the ama, not including paint and the details of the crossbeam struts. There have been quite a few lay days with rainy weather. It looks like the basic main hulls can be built in about 2 weeks each. Waiting for epoxy to set up causes each day's work to be limited somewhat. Slowing down the build process improves the quality. Because these are prototypes the build process is slower than following a set of plans of a proven design.
.
The epoxy race continues with the bonding of the tortured ply keel. The remaining unbonded keel seam runs the full length from bow knuckle to bow knuckle. First it was primed with unthickened epoxy, then filleted with colloidal silica paste. The inside surfaces of the hull sides were primed as well as the bulkhead faces.
.
The ama needed small epoxy touch ups. The wave piercer hull was flipped over from one side to the other. The horizontal exterior hull side and interior of the other hull side were coated with unthickened epoxy.
.
The picture is of the inside of the wave piercer hull with its flat bottom. The actual position is on its side.
