Dinghy Skeg

I was suffering with what seemed like a cold and also had allergy symptoms. I awoke and felt fine. The green pollen that was coating everything was gone. Maybe it will return.

Clammy Hands

Items came in from TEMU, the Chinese cut rate retailer. One was a nice little drone that cost about twelve and a half dollars. It looked like an easy thing to play with while I coughed and sneezed. I was fighting a summer cold, even though it is not summer elsewhere, it seems like it here. A nice [...]

Sun Doggie

After laminating the cedar strips onto the gunwales of the dinghy I found the screws I used wouldn’t come out. The epoxy had seized them. The screw heads were stripped so I cut a straight slot in the heads with the cut off wheel. The cedar smoked when the screw heads got red hot. I could remove [...]

Just Add Water

The rainy weekend started off with overcast and fog but no rain. It looked like I might be able to get something done on the D4 dinghy. I wanted to change the bow seat which is really the bow deck. The sailing option uses the deck to hold the freestanding mast. I didn’t like how the deck looked, [...]

D4 Dinghy Alternative Seats

The rain event was more wind than rain, strong winds with gusts up to 44 mph. We drove into town to see what the harbor was like. There was a small sailboat that had dragged anchor and was sitting close to shore. The tide was out. We left and played with Bleu at Notter’s Pond.

D4 Inside Seams

Day two of the dinghy build started out with me finishing wiring the hull bottoms together on the centerline of the bottom panels. This was much easier than the wiring of the chine edges of the bottom panels and the side panels.

I stopped the agonizing circle of questions about how and why the rigging failed and accepted that it did fail, now get on with things. The mast was disconnected from any remaining stays and brought around to a boat lift on the other side of the docks. The photo is of it raised out of the water.
.
The photo was taken with the Canon EOS 30D with an adapted Minolta lens. It turns out that the adapter distorts and focus is not sharp. The Minolta lenses can be adapted to 4/3's camera format, but not to the Canon EOS. So, my idea of using my old lenses with this digital camera body won't work. There are many manual focus lenses available that will work, so that's what I'll do.
.
With the mast on the lift, measurements could be taken of rigging attachment points. The replacement mast is single spreader design which normally would have a single upper shroud on either side attached at the top of the mast and a pair of lower shrouds attached at the spreaders. A backstay is necessary and with a full battened catamaran sail, the backstay will interfere with the sail. For that reason catamarans often have the triangle or tripod rig with 3 stays, a forestay and two shrouds that lead aft somewhat, leaving room for the full battened sail but restricting how far the boom can be eased out.
.
An insurance adjuster/marine surveyor will inspect the damage in the next few days and a repair estimate will be made. Then the new mast will be assembled and loaded on board. The boat will then motor to a marina that can step a mast and it will be stepped.
.
A couple of EOS 30D's became available on eBay and Craig's List so I bought them at about $40/ea. I was able to make a good working camera out of them. One had damaged flash unit and bad LCD, the other had Error 99, which can mean shutter replacement.
