Grenada

At the end of March we sailed along the east coast of Grenada from Carriacou to the bays at its southern end. Since we were not sailing in the lee of the island we took a precautionary seasickness pill, Stugeron, which is not available in the US but which, as a non-prescriptive medication, can be purchased [...]

Carriacou, Grenada's Grenadine Island

I'd like to fire myself as a blog writer. I have no excuse for waiting a month before writing about one of the most enjoyable islands we've been to. In my defense I'd say that to start writing about Grenada and its islands is to acknowledge that the incredible sailing adventure we've experienced would [...]

Martinique Sud, and a Sample of our Daily Life aboard Katahdin

Today is February 21st. We left St. Pierre on the 8th and meandered our way down Martinique’s west coast to St. Anne at the southeast tip of the island. Along the way we overnighted in 3 anses (anse is a Creole word for bay), with decent snorkeling and hiking, 2 nights in the yachting center for [...]

Antigua

05 January 2016
It's now the first week of the new year and it's been 2+ weeks since the last post. Two excuses - being busy with family visiting for the holidays, and having wretched wifi service. The latter was particularly irksome as we had paid for it and could connect but couldn't get anywhere because there were too many subscribes and too little capacity.

Enough complaining. Currently we are still on Antigua, off Long Island in the North Sound. Of the 19 nights we have been on this relatively small island, we were at anchor for 13 of them off Galleon Beach in Freeman's Bay at the entrance to English Harbor. That's how much we enjoyed being there.

English Harbor has it all. It has a living history with buildings still in use, and fortifications from the late 1700's. Admiral Nelson had his headquarters here. Now there are a few restaurants, a bakery, a couple of retail stores, and a some businesses catering to providing services to the mega yachts that moor off the walkway in this deep water and well protected harbor. It is not tacky at all and anything that would cater to the cruise ship groups who are frequent visitors are kept outside the gate, keeping the old world flavor of English Harbor intact.

Surrounding this idyllic spot are hills with hiking trails leading to breath-taking vistas of nearby Falmouth Harbor. At the outside entrance there is the best snorkeling we have found yet though the waves rolling in from the southeast make it a bit of a challenge to be able to stay put and observe the fish. And on Sunday evenings the fortification on Shirley Heights at the eastern edge of the outer entrance becomes alive with a steel drum band entertaining us while we eat a barbecued meal for a modest fee.

Of course what made this place even more special is because our children, with Rebecca's friend Jad, visited. Five adults and two generations on a 44 foot boat and no issues - wow. Everyone helping out, everyone eager to go on adventures, and lots of chatting and fun. It was a beautiful holiday.

What did we do? We ate out a lot, we swam off the boat a lot, we hiked the surrounding hills a lot, and we simply read or, for Larry and myself, we did some easy boat projects such as scraping off the algae growth and barnacles from the hull. One Sunday, while Rebecca and Jad did scuba or snorkeling, the others did a lengthy zip-line and obstacle course, topping that spectacular day off with the Shirley Heights barbecue. Unfortunately, as the Christmas winds were much in evidence, we couldn't sail up to Barbuda because the swells and wave height would have been extremely uncomfortable. But, for a few nights stay, we did sail to Green Island along the northeast coast where numerous reefs stop the ocean's progress and where kite surfers put on quite a show.

We've posted some pictures from this visit, but of course there are others in the earlier blog post from January, 2012 which is still available online. We'll be heading to Guadeloupe soon to meet up with Larry's sister Kathy and her husband Ralph on the 16th, anchoring in places - finally - that we haven't visited yet.

Katahdin's Photos - Main
We spent most of the last month of our cruise in Mt. Hartman Bay on the southern coast of Grenada. There is a wonderful community of cruisers in this and nearby bays, and we found plenty to do and new friends to make. What we particularly enjoyed were the hashes and hikes we did each week. Do ready the blog of the same name if you want to discover what a hash is.

Grenada is, if not our favorite, at least in the top three. It is a large island, the people are fantastic, and there is so much to see and do that we were too busy to consider posting a blog. But, now that we're back in Maine, we have no more excuses.

Petite St. Vincent (PSV) is part of its namesake, while Petite Martinique belongs to Grenada. They are both considered part of the Grenadine archipelago and are separated by perhaps 1/2 a mile. In fact, they are so far off the normal route that a boat can travel from one to another without having to clear customs on another island.

Carriacou is one of the Grenadine islands; St. Vincent owns most of them but not this one or Petite Martinique. It is an interesting island, hilly with a shipbuilding heritage. We especially liked it because of the large number of cruisers who anchor for a while in Tyrell bay on the southwestern coast.

The Grenadines are a group of tiny to small islands just south of St Vincent and just north of Grenada. With a few exceptions they are wonderfully welcoming and quite beautiful, though, because there has been a consistent drought throughout the past 10 or so months, there's not much greenery.

On the way to our current anchorage at St. Anne at the bottom of Martinique we visited 3 other delightful bays along the way. We've been doing our usual hiking and swimming activities, but this blog also reveals what a "typical" day for us is like.

The photos are from two distinctive and well-known locations on this island. First, from the Jacques Cousteau underwater preserve at Isles des Pigeons on the west coast, and then from the hike up to the tallest mountain on the island, La Soufriere, a still semi-active volcano at almost a mile height.
