The Heights and Depths of Guadeloupe

16 January 2016
We've left Antigua after a really great and long stay, and are now starting our second week in Guadeloupe. We're in another world, with fresh croissants and baguettes just a short walk away. Currently we are in a marina in Pointe a Pitre, the main city along the mid-south coast. We didn't think twice about coming here once we found out what the cost was: $38 a night, in a secure environment, with shore power and water included. The French are fantastic sailors and they do appreciate those who travel by water.

In you're interested in our first stop, at Deshaies, go to the earlier posting from 4 years ago to read about it and view the pictures because this post will be about the heights and depths of this island.

A few hours sail south of Deshaies is the Isles des Pigeons, an underwater sanctuary founded by Jacques Cousteau. We anchored in the bay opposite and took the dinghy ride out to see what all the fuss was about. It was simply the best snorkeling we've had, not only because of the quantity of aquatic life but also the terrain with its steep underwater 50 foot drop-offs. This was unparalleled in our experience. It's a tremendous place to scuba dive and yet we were very content to troll the surface. We did see scuba divers below us which was at first unsettling but then was neat. We've posted quite a few photos of the experience; because we keep to the surface our underwater shots are not as clear or as still as those who can stay under the wave action, but you'll get the idea of how great it is.

As we continued sailing south and then east along the coast we continually saw these massive mountains whose tops were usually shrouded in clouds. One of these is called La Soufriere (we think all the volcanic Caribbean islands have one of the same name - very common). We've been wanting to do some decent hiking so we rented a car and, with our marina neighbors (from West Bath, Maine, no less!) we did this hike. It last erupted in 1976 and still emits a noxious odor that followed us at least partway up its flanks. And, once we went about halfway up, the mists and sometimes rains came along with an every building wind. We summited just when a squall hit and found ourselves being blasted by the winds and the side-ways rain. What an adventure; almost a mile up with no visibility and feeling as if we were on the summit of Mt. Washington in a summer nor'easter. The photos can't begin to explain how we felt.

We took refuge in a stone hut after visiting the very top, to change clothing and eat something. The French are very thoughtful about details like this. They even had 4 foot stakes pounded into the stones at particularly hairy climbing spots and, in one case, a set of stairs about 10 minutes from the summit. Regardless of the support items, it was a very tricky climb and, thank goodness, no one twisted an ankle or banged a knee.

Soon we'll be heading out to the Saintes, an archipelago just south of where we are in Pointe a Pitre. We visited these French isles last time and loved the hiking opportunities and the beaches. Larry's sister and her husband will be joining us for 9 days and we are sure they'll appreciate how special these islands are.

We spent most of the last month of our cruise in Mt. Hartman Bay on the southern coast of Grenada. There is a wonderful community of cruisers in this and nearby bays, and we found plenty to do and new friends to make. What we particularly enjoyed were the hashes and hikes we did each week. Do ready the blog of the same name if you want to discover what a hash is.

Grenada is, if not our favorite, at least in the top three. It is a large island, the people are fantastic, and there is so much to see and do that we were too busy to consider posting a blog. But, now that we're back in Maine, we have no more excuses.

Petite St. Vincent (PSV) is part of its namesake, while Petite Martinique belongs to Grenada. They are both considered part of the Grenadine archipelago and are separated by perhaps 1/2 a mile. In fact, they are so far off the normal route that a boat can travel from one to another without having to clear customs on another island.

Carriacou is one of the Grenadine islands; St. Vincent owns most of them but not this one or Petite Martinique. It is an interesting island, hilly with a shipbuilding heritage. We especially liked it because of the large number of cruisers who anchor for a while in Tyrell bay on the southwestern coast.

The Grenadines are a group of tiny to small islands just south of St Vincent and just north of Grenada. With a few exceptions they are wonderfully welcoming and quite beautiful, though, because there has been a consistent drought throughout the past 10 or so months, there's not much greenery.

On the way to our current anchorage at St. Anne at the bottom of Martinique we visited 3 other delightful bays along the way. We've been doing our usual hiking and swimming activities, but this blog also reveals what a "typical" day for us is like.

During our first visit to St. Pierre we didn't go far afield. This time we did and have a new appreciation for this area.

We had a fabulous time on this island, one of the poorest in the Caribbean. It has been blessed with fantastic beauty and we did our best to take it all in.

After visiting the Pigeon islands and La Soufriere we were looking for places not so popular, and we found them.

The photos are from two distinctive and well-known locations on this island. First, from the Jacques Cousteau underwater preserve at Isles des Pigeons on the west coast, and then from the hike up to the tallest mountain on the island, La Soufriere, a still semi-active volcano at almost a mile height.

These were our last stops in the Virgin Islands where we spent a whole month. It's a great place, and lots of people know that as there are lots of other sailors such as ourselves.
