We decided to travel up what they call the ‘NorthWest Arm’ just west of Halifax rather than go into the busy port. We also wanted to hook up with a few friends (Jeff Nelson and Christine & Charlie) from Nepean Sailing Club who lives here now. Jeff now keeps his boat at Armdale Yacht Club. We were very impressed with the upscale houses along this arm and yacht club along this stretch. Unfortunately we didn’t connect with Christine & Charlie since they were sailing back from Lunenburg that weekend but getting together with Jeff was certainly lots of fun.
During the day we got into Halifax and did some site seeing. One of the spots we visited was Pier 21 which is now a museum that chronicles the days of Canada’s massive immigration program during the 40’s to the 60’s as a million and a half European immigrants arrived at Halifax’s Pier 21. I was one of those immigrants along with my parents and sisters that arrived in that building so this tour was very personal to me. I found information on the ship we arrived on and so many stories of the immigrants experiences as they arrived in this new land. It certainly gave me a renewed respect for my parents for taking on such a brave journey without really knowing what to expect when they landed all for the hope of a better future for their children.
Monday’s weather promised clearing skies the further west we travelled so we ventured off early in the morning towards Lunenburg. The fog was so thick that we saw nothing of the 6 hour trip. We were hoping to take a picture of the famous Peggy’s Cove along the way and we were determined not to let some silly ocean fog prevent us from doing just that. Check out our photo gallery for the result.
