New Year’s Eve at Foxy’s Great Harbour, Jost van Dyke, BVI
31 December 2013
The parties have already begun. Dubbed as ‘the best New’s Year party in the world’ Foxy’s little beach bar on the shores of this bay in Jost van Dyke is preparing, as it has since the 60’s, for it’s famous ‘Old Years Night’.
There was no problem getting the best mooring ball in the bay when we arrived on Saturday morning because of the turn over of boats leaving to get their chartered boat back after their allotted weeks vacation time left them easy targets. Not so today. Even by early yesterday every available mooring ball had been snatched and the mad infilling of anchored boats had started. It’s worse than a Cosco parking lot just before Christmas because once all the spots are gone boats not only start parking anywhere but start doubling up and even tripling up on the mooring balls and anchors. As I write this early in the morning before the great party I think no more boats can fit into this harbour but I’m not that naive to think it won’t double before the day is over. Even the goats on the hill, that have been baying since we arrived, seem to have more panic in their calling.
And while the partiers gather Foxy’s party preparations are in full swing. He’s got a private party upstairs that’s sold out where guests can eat and drink all they want for a mere $400/person. Then there’s the band in the back field that requires a $50/person cover charge and still a third part event, the $20 BBQ up front in the lower bar with a D-jay. As we took a ferry ride to the main island of Tortola yesterday we learned that extra ferries have been put on the schedule so that a ferry load of new partiers will arrive every half hour and the ferries will run til 4:00am. On our ride over we met the refrigeration mechanic that was going over to pay Foxy’s establishment a visit to ensure that all the fridges will be in top working order and, on the ride back we shared our seats with several hundred cases of beer, juices, spirits, cigars, etc., that I’m certain was only the tip of the iceberg.
It was great to meet up with Doug & Cherry once again, as we planned for so many months. They’re anchored a bit further out in the bay since when they arrived all the mooring balls closer were already gone.
It should prove to be a very interesting event.
So to all our friends and family we would like to wish you a Happy New Year from our little boat in the islands.
