Nearly out of the Zone?

05 February 2008
Roger
Trip Log: 1011 nautical miles. It's nearly 3am on Tuesday and we're past longitude 94 west, which is the boundary for the danger zone if you're traveling with one foot on the beach. We're over 50 miles offshore, so we have a little way to go to be completely out of the zone here.

As advertised, there has been very little wind. Yesterday, it was hot and glassy calm. The themes of the day were turtles, flying fish, and jellyfish. The water is a beautiful light blue and you can see well into it. As far down as you could see, there were jellyfish of all sizes and shapes, some the standard cap with tentacles, others three foot long sausages and rings. There were literally thousands in view at any time. Small flying fish were popping out of the water and skimming hundreds of yards all around us, and here and there dotted around the landscape was the shiny brown shell of a turtle. There were no clouds in the sky, and no land in sight. It's been 24 hours since another boat has appeared on the radar, so it's a lonely stretch of water compared to what we've been in on the coast of Mexico.

Legacy is catching up from behind, as they can motor at over 7 knots while we only make around 4.5. Harmony, the little O'Day 30 with Joost and Joyce from Holland, are going one foot on the beach so I believe they'll arrive several days after us.

140 miles down, 340 to go to Barillas, El Salvador.

The first real winds in the Tehuantepec are now forecast for Thursday, and they'll only be around 30 knots or so.
