Galapagos Passage

04 April 2008
Roger
Trip log: 2633 nautical miles. This passage: 245 nautical miles. We motorsailed in the morning, then put up the big MPS (genniker, screecher) sail ("big blue") and were able to make 4-6 knots for over four hours. Toward the end of the MPS run, there was another loud bang, and another log the length of the boat popped up behind us. This one wasn't as thick as the previous one, however. The wind dropped and went forward, so we took down the MPS and went back to motorsailing with the main. After an hour or so, the wind backed again and the jib went up and the motor went to sleep. From about 6pm last night until now, we've had southeast winds from 9-14 knots, and we've been making from 5 to 7.5 knots all night. This is some of the best sailing we've ever had, and naturally, we hope it keeps up! We're now crossing the latitude of the most remote Galapagos islands, Darwin and Wolf, which are 200 miles to the west of us. We have 175 miles to go to Isla San Cristobal. Although there were lightning flashes behind us all night, there were no storms nearby.
