Seisia
Seisia is the coastal port for the Aboriginal settlement of Bamaga and is a popular anchorage spot for those having crossed the Gulf or heading West about to cross the Gulf. We reckon it would be a great spot for a Boat Broker to set up their business as we are not the first to talk of selling their boat on completion of taking on the waters in Gulf of Carpentaria.
We have really enjoyed our anchorage here at Seisia. This is a lovely spot, the locals are all very friendly and helpful. There is a camping ground, kiosk café, a service station and a small but well stocked supermarket and a butcher shop which supplies local meat, best tasting beef we have had for a long time and at great prices. I treated myself to a $2.00 shower at the camping ground, oh…… it was soooo nice. Running hot water at the turn of the tap. Something you all take for granted. We also used their washing machine. Cheapest we have come across yet, $3.00 load. In Darwin we were paying $5.00. The supermarket prices are simular to Darwin and the Diseal $1.76/L. The service at the service station is excellent as the owner, John will run your full jerry cans down to your dinghy. They have a local resident crocodile so paddling too long around ones dinghy is not advised.
From here we lift anchor tomorrow and venture around the top, Cape York Peninsula. With our next challenge being the Albany Passage, where once again timing is imperative, as strong tidal flows are present and at worst, can cause ones vessel to become unmanageable as she loses her wind and can become under the control of the tidal stream. Our Plan is to motor this passage 2 hours after high tide.
We are then on a 4 weeks’ time schedule to get to Cairns as we have flights for NZ, for my son’s wedding.
