Uncle Ed's Visit
20 February 2013 | Krabi Town, Thailand
Uncle Ed Came to Visit
What a pleasure it was to see Ed after all these years! Gromit was abuzz with excitement. The kids could hardly contain themselves! On the day of his arrival, Maia and Liam went to wait just outside the marina and, on his arrival, pounced upon him!
The days flew by and before we knew it, the time came for Ed to say good-bye! But in the 6 days he was with us we had a few adventures.
Ed arrived on the 14th from India, where he'd just finished a 14 day shoot. His friend Noah, who was in Phuket, was making his way to Krabi to spend a few hours with us. He arrived just after Ed had had a rest, so he joined us on our 'discover Krabi' tour. We rented 4 scooters: Michael and Zoe on one, Ed and Liam on the second, Noah on his own and Maia on the back of mine.
We scootered around the island of Krabi for the afternoon. It was a blast! I hadn't ridden a motorcycle in years. What fun! We rode to Ao Nang on the west side of Krabi and then back towards Krabi Town to the airport to pick up Ed's lost, but recovered Iphone.
For dinner, we went to the night food market and had delicious Thai foods: pad Thai, barbequed chicken, pork and squid, spicy soup, stir fried vegetables and for dessert, coconut milk rice with mango.
The following morning, Maia and I went to the market to pick up fresh fruits and vegetables, while Ed, Liam and Noah went to find a new suitcase for Ed. His had a zipper blow-out. By mid-afternoon we were ready to ride the tide out of Krabi River and head to Ko Dam Khwan, a beautiful set of islands about 12 miles away.
We had been in touch with our friends Peggy and David aboard s/v Rhythm, who were already there. They invited us to raft up to them which made socializing much easier. We were very happy to be catching up with them again, as we hadn't seen them since just after New Year's. We had a couple of dinners together and some birthday celebrations; a belated one for David and an early one for Ed. Chocolate cake, banana cake and cheesecake with passion fruit coulis!
After a couple of days at Ko Dam we motored, (no wind) with Rhythm, 5 miles to a little bay at Rai Leh on the south-west coast of Krabi. As we were approaching the bay, one of the kids came up and motioned for me to look behind us at a sailboat approaching quite close. When we finally could see the name of their boat, we all shouted in excitement: "Relapse"!!!! We had heard about this 'kid' boat since before arriving in Indonesia in August and had been trying to meet with them. They had been part of the Sail Indonesia Rally and a month ahead of us in terms of distance. So, we finally got to meet them! Liam was thrilled, as they have two boys aboard!
Our time was running short. Ed only had a couple of days left. He and Liam went kayaking around the huge sheer-cliffed boulders that rise out of the water all around the bay. Maia and Ed went to Ao Nang town together and Zoe and Ed went into shore on the last day to do some setting sun photography. Michael and Ed had a 'brothers only' evening out and we had a lovely dinner ashore with Rhythm.
Early on the morning of the 20th, we loaded Ed and his suitcases into the dingy and took him to Ao Nang to catch a taxi to the airport. We were very sad to see him go, but very grateful to have had 6 days fun days together!
Hey, Uncle Ed, come again soon!!! Love, Zoe, Maia and Liam
