Cruiser's Regatta

26 February 2015 | Bahamas, George Town
Elizabeth
The annual cruiser's regatta and associated activities is going strong this week--I believe it's the 26th one and is held about a month before the island Family Regatta. Today was the actual sailboat racing day with a variety of different classes. Ed and I love a good sailboat race and many years ago raced our Pearson 26 on Lake Norman in NC. I always dreaded the races until the pre-start maneuvering. Then my adrenaline would kick in and all I could think was "Let's kick butt!". I was brutal. I was on the bow during the maneuvering part but for the life of me I can't remember what I did up there. It was important, no doubt. It might have been to help Ed see since our sails were large and blocked the view off the bow. Or it might have been to tell Ed when we had overlap on another boat that we were overtaking. Ed was at the helm until the race started and then I don't remember who did what but the two of us did quite well typically. That feels like a lifetime ago. We loved that boat. Then we had a Catalina 30 on the lake but life got busy and the lake action got even busier. It stopped being fun sailing there and the Catalina was never set up for racing. We were then boat-less until 2008 when we bought Skylark in Maine. We've never raced her but Ed has crewed on a variety of boats throughout the years. The races today were great fun with just enough wind to make for some good action. If there were "incidents" we don't know about them. I only have one complaint. On this morning's cruiser's net the after-race party event was announced. Everyone was told that due to facility constraints, only racing boat crew "and their wives" would be able to attend. Can't we do any better than that in 2015?
