Motor-Concho

Yesterday we went into town, getting a ride on one of these motor-conchos from the entrance of the marina/resort down to the center of Samana, which is only a few miles. Hiring a motor-concho is THE way to travel for the locals, less so for the tourists. Sometimes we see 5 people sitting on one motor-concho and animals, boxes, bags of grain...you name it. There were lots of school children in their uniforms getting rides after school let out for the afternoon, like you see in this photo. I sat in the middle with Ed on the far back. It was a blast and only cost about $1.00 US or 50 pesos. Can't beat that. The town is bustling and has more of a city feel to it then downtown Luperon, but not comparable to Puerto Plata or Santiago. Other than those places, our experience is limited. There was a lot going on, people hoping to give us something to get something, everyone polite but persistent. The funniest was a shoe shine guy (the ones we talked to were both Haitian) who didn't understand why Ed didn't want his sneakers polished. I had flip-flops on so he didn't give my feet a 2nd look. The stray dogs are always hard for me but I force myself to turn a blind eye. Maybe in my next life I'll start spay-neuter clinics in impoverished nations. Or maybe not.
