Produce Market

The produce market was wild. There was an abundance of fruits and local vegetables but not a single solitary onion. We needed celery but it looked wilted. No lemons but lots of limes. Scallions, garlic cloves, huge carrots, cantaloupe, eggplants, potatoes, tomatoes, lettuce, cabbage, beans, plantains...it was slightly overwhelming but not on the same caliber as Guadeloupe and Trinidad. Those markets seem to go on for miles with everyone shouting at you to buy from them. while here was more subdued. This is the outside entrance or at least one of them and inside looked similar. We stayed focused on the produce and not on the thousands of fruit flies that flew over everything we saw. Everyone was helpful and friendly which is what we've come to expect from most Dominicans we meet. And other than the wilted celery, we loved picking out what we needed and had been missing since being in the Bahamas. This country grows an abundance of fruits and vegetables and everything is fresh, nothing imported that we could see. If you're not careful, you risk overbuying and having no way to eat it all before it goes bad. We hired a rickshaw type of motor-concho for the trip back in order to accommodate our shopping bags. Way more expensive but worth it.
