Passing Friends Along the Way

Shortly after we left Samana Sunday morning, we were hailed on the VHF by this sailboat who wanted to make contact and get a weather report from us. It happened to be Igor on s/v Van Dutch who we got to know in George Town, Bahamas. Not long after that we spotted this cruise ship heading in our direction and a few minutes later we heard Igor hailing it to confirm the captain had him in his view and understood he was under sail, not power which technically means the cruise ship would have to give Igor right-of-way. The captain acknowledged he saw him and then Igor confirmed they would pass starboard to starboard. For you non-boaters, that means they would each keep the other boat to their right side, thereby avoiding any confusion and thus collisions. They were very close, perhaps throwing air kisses at the passengers who might have been waving. We were glad it wasn't us.
