Tips for Cruisers: Inventory

In the years before we left land life, Ed came up with a schematic of all the compartments in the belly of Skylark. He numbered and labeled each one, making a copy for our master files in the computer and placing a hard copy in a plastic sleeve where it’s easily accessible. Along with that he created a master inventory list on an Excel spread sheet, organized by contents rather than compartments. With Excel we can also sort by compartments, which I find less useful. We have every little and big item listed on this inventory, except that every once in awhile we can be found searching frantically for something that used to be in F7-HL (Forward 7 Hanging Locker) and was moved to a “better” location without anyone making a notation on the computer. That item is now stored away in a very clever place that no one remembers nor can find when needed. As is true with any brilliant plan, it’s only brilliant if it is utilized…methodically…without fail. It never fails that when we move something, totally convinced we’ll remember just where we put it, we don’t. Oh, don’t get me wrong. The new location is indeed a clever one. It just isn’t known to us.
