Free Range Donkeys

There used to be a lot of donkeys wandering around freely on Bonaire. You can still spot them, as we did the other night when we went out for happy hour at the bar near the marina. Luna loves smelling the donkeys even if she hasn't actually seen them. We didn't point them out to her when we did but she smelled them and the goats. But back to the donkeys, a few years ago someone decided to round up the majority of all the wandering donkeys and brought them to what is now known as the donkey sanctuary. Many residents apparently opposed the idea of this because they liked having them roam freely. We've been to other islands where they roam, like St. John in the USVI and in St. Vincents and the Grenadines. It's always fun seeing them but we keep Luna away because once in Canouan, SVG we had a very rude and determined donkey decide that Luna was trespassing on his streets and must be admonished for her bad behavior. We intervened before said admonishment commenced and have kept our distance from donkeys ever since. We actually were surprised by that encounter because the donkey walked very briskly down the sidewalk once he spotted Luna and there was little time for us to find somewhere to go for protection. It was funny after the fact. Luna had no idea anything was amiss and was thrilled to think this donkey simply wanted to be her new best friend.
