Shadow Sailing from Curacao to Colombia
02 October 2015 | Passage Between Curacao and Colombia
Elizabeth
Leaving Curacao at sunrise Tuesday morning we watched our shadow on the mangroves as we moved away from Spanish Waters into the wild blue yonder. The first 24 hours were perfect with 20-25 knot winds and 6 or 7' seas. It was hot on the boat so we didn't sleep very well off watch but it was enjoyable without the engine droning on. On the 2nd day the wind dropped to 12-15 knots (the forecast was for a steady 20 knot breeze throughout the 3 day trip). The morning of the 2nd day we turned on the engine to charge our batteries and it quickly overheated. As it turned out this had to do with a recently replaced impeller needing to be primed with something called Lithium grease rather than what the manufacturer supplied. It took us about two hours to sort out but it has been running fine ever since. It was one of those WTF moments, especially since Big Red (our new Beta 50 engine) is NOT allowed to have problems. Not yet anyway.
