Recently when we sailed an overnight trip from the Exuma's to the Abaco's we had a slight boat problem that could have been worse if we had been motoring. I was on watch in the middle of the night and Denny was having a hard time sleeping in the aft cabin, so he moved to the middle of the boat in the salon. While there he kept hearing a noise that didn't sound right. He realized it was the bilge pump that wasn't turning off. We have two pumps in the bilge, a smaller one for the little water that accumulates and a larger one for backup just in case we have a problem. What Denny was hearing was both pumps were on non-stop. This is never a good sign. He called me to hold the flash light and saw the bilge full of water. The large bilge pump was on but not doing any good. Denny figured it out pretty quickly. What happened was the large bilge pump clamp came loose the and the hose was dangling free bringing water from outside in. It took some time, but Denny reattached the hose and tightened the hose clamp. Both pumps emptied the water pretty quickly and we are good. Now if we weren't sailing and the motor was on, Denny wouldn't have heard the strange noise and we would have seen water come up the floor boards before realizing we had a problem. Guess the moral to the story is to check the hose clamps from time to time. I'm putting this on Denny's list.
Life is good on Kokomo!
