Here is a video at the cemetery overlooking the town of Santa Rosalia.
We like to walk through cemeteries when we are visiting a new place. You can learn a lot about a place. No need to ask where the cemetery was, you can see it from the boat, or anywhere else in town for that matter. It is on top of a hill overlooking the town. Once we got up the hill, you could see that there were two more cemeteries, both on top of hills overlooking parts of town. It seems the best real estate is reserved for the dead.
Unlike the U.S. where cemeteries are green grass with evenly space and modest head stones. Here, most the grave sites are partially above ground. Head stones are elaborate and attached to an above ground cement or slate grave cover. I don't think the term "six feet under" works here.
Also there is no standard for what's appropriate. Some sites are very expensive and well taken care of. While the site right next to it might be a mound of rocks. The one thing most have in common is they are visited and taken care of. Many sites had fresh flowers or plants and the area around the deceased was swept.
From what I saw, the people of Santa Rosalia have great love for there departed family members. Most sites, overlook the town and ocean, have recently been visited, and are well taken care of. Some have fences around them with extra plots reserved for others, and most of all you see respect.
Looking over at a home on the hill, you can see they have no windows! This is a beautiful location with a spectacular view of the water!
After ten years of planning a trip around the world, we have given up our life on land to head to bluer pastures with the hopes of staying young as long as possible. Our mission is to have fun while moving about the earth. [...]When we finally return to dry land for good, we hope to have seen most of the worlds shore line and experienced things that can only be experienced at 5 knots Of course if we find a place we like and stay there for an extended time, that's ok too.
We have two boys and two grandson's and several friends and family of all ages. Our hope is that those we know will decide to spend some time with us. Life is enjoyed most when you share it with those your closest to.
