Rocna Anchor
13 January 2011 | Bahia Salinas
Denny/Clear 70 degrees North Wind 25 to 30 knots
Day three of winds over 20 knots. Consistent blows of 25 and gusts as high as 33. There is no protection from the wind in this bay, but we are anchored close to shore so there is very little fetch. The boat dances from side to side, but mostly we are sitting flat. With no protection from the wind the loads on the anchor and chain are high.
Today will be the third day of our Rocna Anchor test. We are in 13 feet of water at high tide with 90 feet of chain out. The anchor is 73 lbs, the boat is 42 feet and 23,000 lbs. The bow of the boat is 4 feet off the water making our scope a little over five to one at high tide. Some would say that's not enough but I have watched my anchor in a blow and when set well in sand the only movement I have seen is for the anchor to dig down more. If the bottom was less than perfect, I might let more out but less chain means controlling the swing we get on Kokomo. Remember Kokomo's anchor is two sizes bigger than recommended
The long range forecast keeps extending out and now it looks like we will be here until Saturday. That's a whole week in one bay. The last time we did this was Thanksgiving. We were on the other side of this same island. I guess we like it here.
Books, games, movies, and a project here or there. That's a sailor's life at sea!
