Land and Sea breezes

17 March 2011 | Bahia De Maruata
Denny/82 degrees
After 8 hours of motor sailing at 4 knots we spent the night in Maruata.

For the first time in Mexico we got to watch people surf. their was a nice five or six foot wave brake. Because of the big swell we decided to leave in the morning to go to Caleta De Campos. again we wake to light winds. Don, the weather forecaster for the aria likes to call our conditions Land and Sea breezes. Today they are reported to be 5 to 10 knots from the North West or behind us as we are traveling South East.

If your Idea of great offshore cruising is watching birds feed on small fish, counting Sea Turtles, spotting a Whale or two, and having Dolphins swim on the bow of the boat, with the motor running then this is for you. If you would rather throw up some canvas and let the wind do the work for you then like me you will soon learn that when Don's Weather is for the normal land and sea breeze what he is really saying is "Gentlemen start your engines". Everyone has a speed they want to average and mine is 4 knots. if we are sailing at 3 knots then I start the engine and let it run in gear at a low RPM or whatever it takes to get to 4 knots. I'm not asking for much but 5 knots in a ocean swell is to little.

So far today we have seen 67 Turtles, one Whale , a pod of dolphins and we caught a fish. we also did laundry and are getting ready to clean the boat in 84 degree weather, and its before noon. It's a rough life i guess I should stop complaining.
