Salcaja, is a town about 30 minutes from Xela. It is known for sweet homemade wines and the old church. The church in Salcaja is still in use for services and special occasions. But during the week you must get permission to go inside. Lucky for us we were given that permission. The church is the oldest church in Central America. It was built in 1425 making it just short of 600 years old.
The tile floors are all original. The ceiling and roof have been replaced but the wood beams columns that hold the church up are also original. This fact is amazing as wood down here seems to rot quickly. About a block way there is a new church built to resemble the old church but only bigger.
The town of Salcaja is proud of their churches as they should be. 600 years is a long time.
Of course the next stop was to taste the homemade wine.
It was a little strong and sweet for me but you dessert wine drinkers would have been in heaven.
After ten years of planning a trip around the world, we have given up our life on land to head to bluer pastures with the hopes of staying young as long as possible. Our mission is to have fun while moving about the earth. [...]When we finally return to dry land for good, we hope to have seen most of the worlds shore line and experienced things that can only be experienced at 5 knots Of course if we find a place we like and stay there for an extended time, that's ok too.
We have two boys and two grandson's and several friends and family of all ages. Our hope is that those we know will decide to spend some time with us. Life is enjoyed most when you share it with those your closest to.
