The maze

29 October 2011 | Porvenir, Panama
Denny/85 degrees, cloudy, no rain
Now that we have made it to the San Blas Islands its time to relax. At first glance it looks easy but a closer look at the water shows a maze of corral heads. Today we plan on moving the boat about 5 miles to met friends we have run into along the way sense El Salvador. They have been a month ahead of us for the past 6 months and are leaving the San Blas Sunday. To get to their boat we must work our way threw the maze of corral heads outlined in the cruising guide. We mark the Chart plotter with way points, then Becky stands on the bow of the boat and we motor as slow as we can hopping we put all the GPS numbers in correctly. If we get off coarse to far Becky will point the way she thinks I should turn and all will be fine. How the explorers of the past did this without GPS, well maybe that's why there are so many old ship wreaks. The good news is the water is clear, very clear. While sailing here yesterday we fished in water 40 to 50 feet deep, we could see the sand and corral bottom. Kuna free divers were catching lobster by spotting them form the surface then diving down to get them. So far I have learned to free dive to about 20 feet. then It's time for me to come up. Yesterday I retrieved a snorkel form the bottom in 24 feet of water. I could not have done that a month ago. the Kuna divers can hold their breath for more than 2 minutes. Quite amazing if you ask me. Our fresh Barracuda dinner last night was great, I am such the provider.
