Before we left Boca Raton, Denny told me he was going to buy tow insurance through West Marine. The cost is $150/year. I thought it was a waste of money. We have gone 11,075 miles since we left Tacoma and he has never run aground. Well today he proved me wrong. We had been watching the channel markers more than the chart plotter (not always accurate), and our depth gage. We were following a Beneteau sailboat and all of a sudden it ran aground. Denny decided to go around the boat turning more toward the center of the channel - wrong choice. Our depth was 4.5 and we stopped. The tide was low and coming up. Had we waited an hour or so we would have started floating again. It turns out in this particular area you need to hug the beach and not the middle. We called TowBoats US and they pulled us back floating in less than 15 minutes. If we hadn't had the tow insurance it would have cost us $800. I'm so glad Denny bought the insurance!
The ICW is nice but Denny prefers the open ocean.
Life is good on Kokomo!
