29 July 2014 | Cartagena
Becky/Denny
We are anchored in Cartagena after 476 miles and 70 hours. The seas and winds built during the third day to 10-12' and winds up to 34 knots. I would sit in the back and watch the back end lift up and surf down the wave. I was judging the wave height to how fast we went. A 11' wave would come and I'd look at the speed and we would be surfing at 11 knots, it looked like we were on a water slide. The rough part was in the night. You would hear the wave coming, then you just hoped the auto pilot would keep the boat straight. I saw the boat surf down a wave at 16 knots! But Denny saw the most our boat has ever gone, he saw 18.4 knots with 35 knots of wind. He said "only in sailing can you have the shit scared out of you and smiling at the same time". Well, only one of us was smiling during that time!
We are here in Cartagena until the middle of next week, then we head for San Blas.
