Nurse Shark Encounter

19 October 2014 | Western Cocos, San Blas Islands
Denny and Becky 85 and sunny
OMG! I have never come so close or seen such a huge shark before! Denny and I decided to snorkel around the island we are anchored next to. Because we were so close, we didn't use a dinghy and swam from the boat. We swam around big coral heads in about 10 feet of water. All of a sudden I see ahead about 10 feet near the bottom a 8-10' nurse shark coming at me. I had coral heads to my left and right, the only thing I could do is stay put or turnaround. My instincts told me to turnaround, so I did and looked for Denny who was at my left. I yelled there was a nurse shark coming at us. He told me in a calm voice, not to worry, one of them went under some rocks and the other is following. What? There are two? I high tailed back to the boat as quick as I could. I know they won't hurt you, and they could have easily, but the one I saw was huge!

Becky

Can you believe I have Becky convinced a 9 foot shark won't hurt her? At a distance nurse sharks are fun to watch as they just sit on the bottom and mind their own business. But these two sharks were just as surprised to see us as we were to see them. And we were less than ten feet apart when they rounded the coral head. We turned around and started swimming the other way. I looked back and the sharks were swimming the other way also. It was an exciting encounter. I wish we had had a camera as that's the closest I want to come to a shark. I think we will swim back that way today so we can overcome our fears and enjoy the safe waters of the San Blas.
